Fernanda teaches with love

Fernanda Usina
Dear Pamela, Jodie, Douglas, Laurent, Catherine, UBS, Grace, Julia, Ted Wells, Anupama, Howard, James and Julie, James, Jeffrey, Kandace, Molly, and Susan,

Fernanda is 30 years old, yet has been teaching at CENIT for nearly 11 years.  She teaches sewing and design classes to the girls in CENIT’s vocational high school.  In addition to more general education courses such as math and writing, the girls at CENIT’s high school learn how to design clothing, prepare and sew pieces, and tailor clothing. These skills prepare them for jobs upon graduation, which is the first step toward economic self sufficiency.

Fernanda loves teaching at CENIT, and has stayed so long because she loves the students so much. She easily relates to the students, and many of them consider her to be a close friend and maternal figure because of the advice and patience she also gives them.

Aside from class material, Fernanda makes an effort to also help her students navigate the complicated social scene that is adolescence.  Thanks to the generosity of many donors, Fernanda will keep teaching at CENIT, and continue to touch the lives of the girls she works with.

Andres Looks Ahead to his Future!

Andres2
Dear Laurent,

Andrés is 11 years old, and studies at the Otto Arosemena Gómez School in the southern part of Quito, Ecuador. He is in the 8th grade, meaning next year he’ll start high school. His mother is currently unemployed, and stays at home cooking and cleaning. His dad sells CDs and music on the street, and sometimes paints houses or works as a DJ when there is work.

Andrés’ older brothers are married and live outside of the home, so it’s important that Andrés has good communication with his parents since it’s just the three of them at home.

He’d like to go to the Juan Pío Montufar High School (high schools in Ecuador are private, and students must apply), which is one of the best high schools in town. Since Andrés is a good student, he has a shot at getting in. Still, attending homework help sessions are very important, and have allowed Andrés to be a successful student. Thanks to Laurent’s generosity, Andrés will be able to keep attending these important sessions at CENIT. Thank you for your support of his future education!

Monica Loves Learning!

Monica
Dear UBS,

Monica is 9 years old, and is in the fifth grade at the Otto Arosemena Gomez school in the south of Quito. Her favorite subject is natural sciences, and when she grows up she thinks she’d like to be a doctor to help low income people like her who grew up without access to medical care.

Monica’s dad is a taxi driver, and works mainly in the vicinity of the Mayorista Market, where fruits, meats, and vegetables are sold. Her mother has a small stand in the nearby Camal market, where she sells vegetables. Her parents get along well, don’t fight much, and support their children with love and care.

Monica has been attending homework help sessions at CENIT for the past seven years, and really likes to have the support and resources to complete her homework. She also likes reading the books that are available in the CENIT library. Monica’s teachers have commented that her grades are improving, and commend her progress. Thanks to UBS, Monica will continue receiving the important homework help she’s come to count on at CENIT. Thank you so much!

Mateo is a resilient student!

Mateo works hard at his homework
Dear UBS,

Mateo’s story is compelling. He is 9 years old, and his family is from a very poor part of the Ecuadorian coast. Although his family migrated to Quito, his dad still returns to the coast every three months to work, but earns very little money to contribute to their humble household. His mom works as a house servant about an hour and a half outside of Quito, and earns just a few dollars a day.

All of this stress, as well as other factors, has certainly taken a toll on their household: which used to be filled with domestic stress. The whole family has undergone extensive psychological therapy at CENIT, and are now living together more peacefully.

Mateo entered CENIT as an impatient and often naughty boy, but his teachers have noticed that his behavior is improving, and that he seems to be more interested in learning, and doing his homework. Mateo is 9 years old, and is in the fourth grade at the Otto Arosemena Gomez school.  He loves gym class, and especially playing soccer with his friends.

Thanks to your generosity, Mateo receives a whole year of academic tutoring. This opportunity offers Mateo the one-on-one attention he needs to grow as a student. Thank you for contributing to Mateo’s future success!

Jordan Gets Another Year of Homework Help

Jordan focuses on his homework at CENIT
Dear Kandace,

Jordan is nine years old, and studies at the Jorge Martillo Ortega school, where he is in fourth grade.  His favorite subject is computers, and he loves drawing on the computer.  He lives with his mother, who works selling tickets in a parking lot from Monday to Friday, and his Dad who works as a construction worker and earns minimum wage. He has three brothers and sisters.

Jordan says he’d like to be a policeman or a member of the military when he grows up, so he can help other people.

He’s been attending CENIT’s homework help sessions for the past four years, and is grateful for all the help he’s received. He now feels like he can do a better job at school, and thus get a bit farther in life this year thanks to Kandace’s generosity.

Steven Blessed with Support!

Steven hard at work
Dear Matthew,

Steven is 7 years old, and is in third grade at the Fifth of June School in the south of Quito. His favorite subject is math, and he says he’d like to be a policeman when he grows up.

His mom works in a small city called Machcahi, about 30 minutes south of Quito. She works on a farm cutting flowers and sowing grains: and she earns $30 per week, or $120 a month. Steven’s mom works as a construction worker on a contract basis, but many days there isn’t any work.

Steven has been studying at CENIT for about a year. When he first came to the homework help sessions, he was diagnosed with malnutrition: due to his family’s lack of income they were unable to provide regular nutritious meals. By eating lunch and an afternoon snack at CENIT, Steven’s nutrition has improved, increasing his ability to concentrate on his school work.

Thanks to Matthew’s support, Steven will be able to keep attending homework help sessions at CENIT, where he receives important academic, nutritional, and social support. Thank you for providing him this opportunity, Matthew!

Miguel is an Exemplary Student!

Miguel-Angel
Dear Laurent,

Miguel Ángel is a friendly third grader at Manuel de Jesús Calle school in Quito. He’s recognized by his teachers as being very participative in class: whenever he’s not in class (and once in a while during class), he’s busy playing with his friends. He’d like to be a Doctor one day, and help low income patients.

His mom sells used clothing in Camal market in the south of Quito, and his dad works to carry customers’ purchases out of the same market. Both of their earnings go towards maintaining their ten member household, and money is often tight.

Miguel Ángel has been attending homework help sessions at CENIT for two years, and the improvement has been visible. He is now better at concentrating, and has also improved his grades.

Laurent’s generosity will keep Miguel Ángel on the road to success, and in CENIT´s homework help sessions. Thank you so much, Laurent!

Things are Getting Better for Roberto

Must be good... the girls in the background certainly have their eye on Roberto!
Dear Alison,

Roberto Lema is 8 years old, and is a fourth grader at the José Maria Urbina School in Quito.   When Roberto started attending CENIT he had a pretty rough home situation, but both he and his parents have received classes at CENIT and things have improved considerably thanks to Roberto’s better behavior and his parents’ new parenting skills.

His dad works in the market helping to carry customer purchases, and his mom walks around the same market selling fruits. Between the two of them, they barely earn minimum wage, and money is tight.

Roberto’s favorite subject is math, and he’s working hard to get better grades in class. His teachers say his behavior is improving in the classroom too, which is sure to help.

Having a healthy lunch is really important to Roberto’s continued behavioral and academic improvement, and something he wouldn’t be able to count on without CENIT, and Alison’s generosity. Thank you so much, Alison!

Physical Education is Very important at CENIT!

Fabian
Dear Alisa, Aaron, Charlie, Katherine, Patrice, Anuj, Kunal, Allyson, Amit, Cat, Chuck, Laurent, Eileen, George, Craig, Elena and Shanen, and George,

Fabian teaches physical education at CENIT; both in the high school and primary school. He is a well respected teacher who has created a a great relationship with his students.  He has been at CENIT for 8 years, and is constantly working hard to improve his classes.

Physical education is an important class at CENIT because it gives the students the chance to play and exercise–luxuries they normally wouldn’t have between school, work, and helping out around the house. The chance to simply be kids for a while: to run and jump and even to work on their motor skills, is really important.

The students also appreciate having a positive male role model who they can relate to like they can with Fabian.

Thanks to your generosity, CENIT will have enough funds to pay Fabian’s salary for another month, and keep CENIT students in gym class! A special thank you to Charlie, Katherine, Patrice, George H., Elena and Shanen, and George A. for each providing multiple donations! Thank you to all of you!

Kevin Appreciates a Month of Lunches!

Kevin enjoys some warm soup at CENIT
Dear Steve,

Kevin is 13 years old, and attends CENIT’s “ESTAR” school, where he is in third grade. Kevin lives with his older brother; his parents are unfortunately not present in his life and face their own difficulties. His mother disappeared when he was young and he hasn’t heard from her in years, and his dad is in a rehab center. Kevin and his brother used to live with his grandmother before attending “ESTAR” school.

Despite a lot of challenges at home, Kevin is a dedicated student, and dreams about being a doctor some day.

Thanks to your generosity, Kevin knows he will have warm lunches at CENIT this month, making a noontime meal one less thing to worry about on a daily basis.
